INTRODUCTION

Speedway is a game of high-speed racing. You'll tear down the road, competing against yourself or a compter-controlled opponent, and matching scores with other players around the world. Computer controlled cars will keep you on your toes as you take the turns.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  • Speedway requires:
  • Internet Explorer v.4.0 or higher
  • a 3D accelerated video card with at least 2 MB of video RAM (4 MB of RAM reccomended)
  • Windows 95 or above
  • 32 MB of system RAM (48 MB reccomended)
  • Direct-X 5 or above
  • If your computer does not meet these requirements, you should receive a message in Speedway letting you know that your system setup is insufficient.

GETTING STARTED

When you first run Speedway, you'll be prompted for an initial detail setting. The detail setting determines how much media to load to run Speedway, as well as what quality this media will be. These options may be changed at any time during gameplay. The initial options are as follows:

HIGH : All media, sound effects, music, and special effects will be loaded.

MEDIUM : All media, sound effects, music, will be loaded, but graphics will be lower in detail, and there will be fewer special effects.

LOW : All media and sound effects will be loaded. Graphics will be highly compressed, music will not be loaded, and no special effects will be used.

BARE : Only the lowest detail graphics will be loaded. No sound, music, or special effects will be used.

After selecting an initial option, Speedway will begin to stream in the media, and will present you with a title screen after a few seconds.

THE MAIN MENU

SELECTING A CAR

After choosing Time Trials or Match Trials from the Main Menu, you'll be presented with the Car Selection screen. The available cars will be displayed in a revolving ring. Press the left and right arrow buttons to cycle through the cars. Each car's specific properties and name will be displayed when you bring it to the front. Each car handles differently, so try them all! When you've decided upon a car, simply click Accept. You will now be prompted to select a track.

SELECTING A TRACK

After selecting your car, you'll be presented with the Track Selection screen. A picture of the currently selected track will be displayed. Press the left and right arrow buttons to cycle through the tracks(Only one in download version). When you've decided upon a track, click 'Accept' and wait while the race loads.

RACING

Racing is very straightforward in Speedway. Each race consists of two laps around the track. At the beginning of the race a starting light will cycle from red to green - when the light reaches green, you're off! Use the up arrow to accelerate, the down arrow to brake, and the left and right arrows to turn.

RACING TIPS

Don't accelerate through the curves - make sure to let up on the gas.

Braking while turning causes the handbrake to be used. The handbrake is very effective for executing tight turns at high speeds, but can take some practice to get used to.

The space bar acts as a panic button - if you get hopelessly off course, press the space bar to be sent back to the road and pointed in the right direction. You will lose all your speed when you use the panic button, and will have to accelerate from a dead stop.

MAKING SPEEDWAY RUN FASTER

Speedway is designed to run well on a wide range of machines. Here are some suggestions to make sure Speedway runs well on your computer.

  • Set your video mode to 16-bit color (right click on your dekstop, select Properties, then Settings, then change colors to "Hight Color/16bit").

  • Special effects like treadmarks and smoke clouds are expensive - if gameplay hitches or stutters, then turn Special FX to low in the Detail Settings menu.

  • If your Video Card has 4MB of video RAM or less, use the medium or low quality texture settings. Larger and more detailed textures take more memory, and will cause the game to run slowly if your card has insufficient video RAM.

  • Some video cards only support hardware acceleration in fullscreen mode. Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards are a common example. Make sure to play the game in fullscreen mode to take advantage of hardware acceleration.

TROUBLESHOOTING
  • Do you have the WildTangent web driver installed on your system? Speedway requires it. If not, you can get it here.

  • Do you have a supported browser? The WildTangent web driver requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4+.

  • Do you have DirectX? The web driver requires you to have Microsoft's DirectX installed on your system. Most systems already have DirectX installed, but if yours doesn't, you can get it here.

  • If you receive a message saying that no 3D Hardware Accelerator was found, but you believe you have one, there are several possible problems.

    • If you are using Windows NT 4, hardware acceleration is not supported by the OS.
    • Some video cards do not support hardware acceleration in higher color depths. Try changing your color depth to 16 bit color.
    • If your hardware accelerator is a secondary display device, it cannot be used. Your hardware accelerator must be your primary display device.
